I think if you do some research you will find that only infants in carseats and those are the reverse facing carseats, should have the air bag OFF. If it were my grandma I would want a half dozen air bags all around her.
You might check with the dealer to see if the airbag on-off switches are still available. The attached page is from my LS owners manual. We thought having the switches installed for my wife but never did.

Toyota never allowed you to disable the airbag in the past for safety reasons - people forget to turn it back on again and there is always the remote possibility of the airbag deploying even if it is disabled, however they do allow you to disable it on newer vehicles so their view must have changed.
